DELANCEY FAMILY CEMETERY

West Latimer Area

LOCATION: Extreme western Jackson County in the SE/4, SW/4, NW/4 of Section 34, T6S-R9W.  Approximately 3.60 miles NNE of D' Iberville, Mississippi.

DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Bienville Boulevard (US 90) and Washington Avenue at Ocean Springs, Mississippi go N-NW on Washington Avenue in Ocean Springs for 2.5 miles to LeMoyne Boulevard.  At LeMoyne Boulevard go west (left) 3.5 miles to Lamey Bridge Road.  Here go N (right) 2.25 miles to Johnson Road.  On Johnson Road go NE .50 miles to Daisy-Vestry Road.  At this juncture, go left (N) .75 miles on Daisy-Vestry to its intersection with McClellan Road.  Go west .30 miles to the Delancey Cemetery at the end of McClellan Road.

HISTORY:

The history of the Delancey Family Cemetery can be interpreted from the US Census Records, Jackson County Land Deed Records, and other reliable sources as follows:

The earliest burial in the cemetery is that of Susan Delancey (1835-1884).  From the US Census of 1870, she is the wife of Henry Delancey (1830-1903).  At this time, the Delanceys were living in T7S-R9W (south of the Cemetery and NW of Ocean Springs).  Henry was a coal burner and they had four sons: David (1857-1942), Richard (b. 1858), William (b.1860), and ? (b.1867).  After Susan Delancey died in 1884, Henry married Francies Dees (1847-1927).

            William Delancey (b. 1860) who was living at Florala, Mississippi, the site of a large turpentine still between Latimer and Larue in western Jackson County, purchased a tract of land from J.H. Johnson on June 29, 1905, to wit:

          Situated in Jackson County, Mississippi, 1/4 of an acre in the SW/4, of the NW/4, Section 34 T6S-R9W, known as the De Lancy grave yard and to be used for a cemetery and burial purposes and no other.(JXCO, Ms. Land Deed Bk. 29, p. 63)

            It is of interest that Mary Elizabeth Delancey (1870-1950) interred here was the postmaster at Florala from 1901-1905, and at Latimer in 1908.
