HISTORY:
The Martin Ryan Memorial Cemetery is appropriately named for Martin
Ryan. Martin Ryan (1842-1913) was the son of Pierre Ryan
(1790-1878) and Marie-Josephe Ladner. His father, Pierre, obtained
a 40-acre land patent (NW/4 of the NW/4 of Section 13, T7S-R9W) from
the US Government in 1841. Pierre Ryan homesteaded here. In 1846,
he acquired the S/2 of Lot 4 (SW/4 of the NW/4 of Section 13,
T7S-R9W) from the US Government. The Martin Ryan Cemetery is
located on this parcel. Pierre Ryan now had 80 contiguous acres and
access to the Bay of Biloxi through Bayou Porteaux. This tract is
immediately northwest of Gulf Hills.
Pierre
and Marie Josephe Ryan reared a large family in this area of Jackson
County. Pierre provided for his family by farming, fishing,
charcoal making, and woodcutting. Their children were:
Marie-Martha, who married Juan Antonio Rodriguez; Caroline, who
married Alfred Ladnier; Marie Eulalie, who married Ramon Canet;
Marie, who married Thomas Hanson; John Eugene, who married Marie
Eudoxie Delaunay; Josephine, who married Jean Baptiste Fontaine;
Edmond, who married Adele Bosarge; Rene, who married Louise
Westbrook; St. Cyr; Martin, who married Permelia Delaunay; and
Eugenie. Martin Ryan (1842-1913) married Permelia Delauney
(1847-1877), of Biloxi about 1864. She was the daughter of Robert
Delauney and Claire Ladner. Ryan made his livelihood initially on
the sea. Later he was a charcoal burner. The Martin Ryan children
were: Amanda (1867-1957), Mary Clara (1869-1910), Adolph
(1871-1945), Thalie Olivia "Juline"
(1873-1957), and twins, Edward (b. 1877) and Ogerau (Angero)
(1877-1955).
Before
Pierre Ryan died in 1878, he sold Martin all of Lot 4 (W/2 of the
NW/4 of Section 13, T7S-9W) on December 25, 1871. He probably lived
here and the cemetery is located in the S/2 of Lot 4. On December
2, 1912, Martin Ryan sold 34 acres in the S/2 of Lot 4 to Juline
Ryan Seymour, his daughter. Martin Ryan died in 1913.(JXCO, Ms.
Land Deed Bk. 14, p. 494 and Book. 39, p. 92)
This
cemetery is unique for the large number of weathered cypress
headboards still remaining. It is a small but historic family
cemetery and may have been known as the Tiblier Cemetery at one
time.
PRIMARY FAMILY INTERMENTS:
Basque, Fountain, Ladner, Morris, Ryan, Seymour, Tiblier, and Webb.
